On December 21, 2011, AFC Ajax and AZ played each other in the eighth final of the KNVB Cup. After 37 minutes, with Ajax leading 1-0, an Ajax supporter (who already had a stadium ban) climbed over the fence of the north stand in the Amsterdam Arena to kick Esteban in the back. Esteban dodged and kicked the hooligan twice. Esteban was shown a red card, after which AZ coach Gertjan Verbeek ordered his players off the field. The match was stopped.
