Barry 'rolling tongue' Hughes

18,00

Barry Hughes, bald Welshman and known for the carnival hit "I want a wall-to-wall carpet on my head," is a soccer coach of the practical joke. As coach of Go Ahead Eagles, he let his players practice free kicks in front of a wall of mannequins, and as coach of Haarlem, he saw his chance at the end of 1978 to put Georg Kessler of AZ'67 to shame.

Formal German Kessler was employed by the Dutch Football Association when Hughes was going up for his trainer's certificate there. Kessler belittled Hughes on the course and failed him. When his tormentor stands on the sidelines during Haarlem-AZ'67 to coach his team, Hughes takes a child's toy out of his jacket, a birthday whistle, an old-fashioned rolling tongue. Pffft does Barry behind Kessler's back. And again: pffft. The Haarlem crowd is in a huff: pffft. The much higher ranked AZ'67 gets upset and loses 3-2 to relegation candidate Haarlem. And in the evening during Studio Sport, the television audience is also laughing: pffft!
